Buster Posey Caps Comeback Year With MVP

The National League Most Valuable Player award voters came to the same conclusion that any Giants-watcher had to reach in 2012: This team would not have gone far without its 25-year-old catcher and leader.

Less than three weeks after completing his first full season in the majors by winning his second World Series championship ring, Buster Posey won the MVP in a landslide Thursday, the capstone to his comeback from a severe leg injury that wiped out most of his 2011 season.

He earned 27 of 32 first-place votes from the Baseball Writers Association of America . Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun , who finished second, garnered three first-place votes, and Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina got the other two, though Molina finished fourth behind Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen .

Posey's MVP award is the 10th won by a San Francisco Giant. Willie Mays won in 1965, Willie McCovey in 1969 and Kevin Mitchell in 1989. Barry Bonds won five, including four in a row from 2001-04. Jeff Kent won in 2000.

Posey also joined Mays and McCovey as the only Giants to win Rookie of the Year and an MVP. Orlando Cepeda won rookie honors as a Giant and MVP as a St. Louis Cardinal.

"To hear my name mentioned with those guys doesn't even seem real," Posey said.

In interviews throughout the day, Posey credited the Giants for fielding good players, making it easier for all to succeed.

Asked if the award was more meaningful in light of his 2011 injury, Posey said, "I think wining the MVP, whether coming off an injury or never being injured, is an extremely gratifying accomplishment. I do know I definitely have a deeper appreciation being able to play baseball. I've seen it can be taken away quick. Hopefully I can continue to embrace the game and enjoy it."

Posey already has embraced a lot of hardware. Just 308 games into his major-league career he also has won a Silver Slugger, Comeback Player of the Year and the Hank Aaron Award as the league's best offensive player, notably winning all those honors as a catcher.

He is the first NL catcher to be MVP since Johnny Bench in 1972.

"Congrats, Buster. Not a bad start to a career," shortstop Brandon Crawford tweeted shortly after the award was announced.

Pablo Sandoval also hopped on Twitter to say, "This kid is a beast."

Crawford later expressed via e-mail how valuable Posey is to the Giants.

"His offensive numbers obviously speak for themselves. They are MVP-worthy alone," Crawford said. "But that's not all he brings to our team. He is our team leader. He works hard to learn hitters to make sure he puts down the right signs for our pitchers.

"He has become a very good catcher in the short time he's been back there and he has a calm demeanor that keeps us all under control in big situations. I'm very happy for him. It couldn't happen to a better guy."

Braun, the runner-up, praised Posey in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel .

"I think Buster Posey deserved to win," the 2011 MVP said. "What he was able to accomplish this year as a catcher for a team that eventually went on to win the World Series was incredible. I thought he was the best player."

Though Braun led the NL in OPS at .987, Posey won the NL batting title with a .336 average and had the highest wins above replacement figure in the league at 7.2 (the Baseball Reference version).

Beyond the stats, Posey played a pivotal role in guiding the Giants to their second National League West title in three seasons and, ultimately, another World Series championship.

He stepped up his game when the Giants needed it most, after Melky Cabrera was suspended Aug. 15 for the rest of the regular season. Posey's OPS of .973 after the Cabrera suspension was higher than his full-season OPS of .957.

Posey also quarterbacked the pitching staff, aside from Tim Lincecum and Barry Zito in most games. When he did not catch, Posey played a creditable first base. He played in 148 games overall after going down with a horrific leg injury and missing the final four months of 2011.

Manager Bruce Bochy , who talked up Posey's MVP credentials throughout the postseason, said Posey's win was "awesome" and "richly deserved," especially after the physical mountain he had to climb after his injury.

"The numbers speak for themselves," Bochy said. "The intangibles are immeasurable to our team. His professionalism, handling the staff, are just a couple of intangibles that make him so valuable to our club."

General manager Brian Sabean said in a statement released by the team that Posey "is establishing himself as one of the premier athletes in baseball today."
