CORPUS CHRISTI "Four Moody baseball players lead the way on the South Texas Preseason High School All-Star Team.
Thirty-one players from 19 schools make up the team that will be recognized at the Ninth Annual South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet on Jan. 23 at the Omni Bayfront Hotel.
Moody's junior pitcher Kenneth Saenz, junior catcher Michael Cantu, junior first baseman Ricky Gonzalez and senior outfielder J.D. Garcia all made the team. The Trojans return five starters from last year's squad that was ranked as high as No. 3 in the state and made it to the region semifinals.
Saenz went 11-3 last year with a team-best 1.06 earned-run average. He struck out 141 batters with just 33 walks in 85.2 innings. Gonzalez batted .265 with a .458 slugging percentage and 20 RBIs. Garcia led the team in hitting with a .481 average and 13 stolen bases. The Trojans will get a big boost with the transfer of Cantu, who hit .343 with four home runs and 29 RBIs last season at Carroll. On the mound, Cantu was 5-0 with a 1.70 ERA.
Carroll, King, Calallen and Flour Bluff each had two players on the big-school (Class 5A-4A) team.
Carroll, which has been to three straight state tournaments, had first baseman Brandon Burns and shortstop Rene Pineda make the list. King pitcher Justin Sanchez and outfielder Eric Perez made the team. Calallen second baseman Lee May Gonzalez and outfielder Preston Dorsey, and Flour Bluff third baseman Will Mendiola and designated hitter Johnny Luby also made the team.
Sinton and Robstown lead the way on the small-school team with three representatives each.
The Sinton trio is comprised of junior pitcher Donivan Lopez, senior second baseman Trey Gallegos and senior designated hitter Gerad Galloway. Robstown is represented by junior shortstop Michael De Los Santos, senior outfielder Victor Leal, and senior utility player Brandon Garza.
Orange Grove is the only other small school with multiple players on the team in senior pitcher/third baseman Chris Solano and senior outfielder Rayce Gatlin.
Dorsey, Perez and Solano are the only repeat honorees from last year.
The teams were selected by the votes of 28 South Texas high school coaches and media members.
Baseball practice begins Jan. 25 and the first regular season games are Feb. 18.
Tickets for the banquet are $50 and available by calling the Corpus Christi Hooks at 561-4665.
