Griswold Teachers Offered Incentive To Retire

The Griswold Board of Education on Monday approved its second retirement incentive in as many years.

A $10,000 retirement incentive will be offered to teachers on the top step of the salary scale who announce their retirement by Feb. 1. Teachers who have reached step 14 on the salary scale and have received a master's degree, earn $74,565 this year, according to the Griswold Education Association union contract.

This is the second retirement incentive the district has offered in two years. Seven senior teachers accepted a $15,000 retirement incentive last year and helped the district save thousands in negotiations that produced a $24.67 million budget.

Superintendent Paul Smith said Tuesday that he expects slightly fewer takers this year, maybe five or six teachers. There is a cost savings in replacing the retiring older, more experienced teachers with new teachers, who this year are making $39,979 with a bachelor's degree and $41,971 with a master's degree. The salary schedule for 2013-14, the final year of the teachers' four-year contract, is still under negotiation.

"I don't want people to think we're trying to get rid of our older, more expensive teachers," Smith said. "The pool right now is very strong. While you don't want to lose all your senior staff, I don't think $10,000 is going to drive anyone away, and it will certainly provide the town with some positive budget savings."

Griswold Education Association President Matthew Dyer did not return a phone message Tuesday seeking comment on the incentive offer.
