MP Calls Bishop 'a Narcissistic Bimbo'

Federal Labor MP Steve Gibbons says deputy Liberal leader Julie Bishop is 'a narcissistic bimbo' and her boss 'a gutless douche bag'.

Steve Gibbons also said Opposition Leader Tony Abbott was 'a gutless douche bag'.

Both were not fit to be MPs let alone prime minister and deputy prime minister he tweeted on Wednesday.

Mr Gibbons later tweeted: 'Apologies to those offended by my use of the word Bimbo. I'll replace that word with Fool'.

His Labor colleagues distanced themselves from the tweet.

'Steve, I love you, but you're way out of line,' MP Ed Husic told Sky News.

'I wouldn't do it and I wish he hadn't have.'

Families Minister Jenny Macklin said the backbencher's language was inappropriate.

'Nobody should use that language about other members of parliament,' she told Sky News.

Mr Gibbons, who has announced he is retiring from parliament at the next election, has a history of making colourful statements.

He called Kevin Rudd 'a psychopath with a giant ego', during the former prime minister's leadership challenge in February.

The opposition wants Prime Minister Julia Gillard to stand by her vow to call out misogyny wherever she saw it.

Opposition spokeswoman on women's affairs Michaelia Cash said Ms Gillard should call on Mr Gibbons to resign as deputy chair of a parliamentary committee and relinquish all benefits associated with that position.

'If the prime minister does not do that immediately the prime minister's words mean absolutely nothing,' she told The Australian online.

'The coalition calls on the prime minister to do as she stated and hold Mr Gibbons to account for his sexist comment.'

Mr Gibbons later tweeted: 'To all of those offended by my Tweet posts this morning - I unreservedly apologise'.
