Thanks to all who replied. I started disassembling the front panel/door
of the dishwasher, got to the point of needing to get 8 or more areas of
a clip which went around the soap/rinse aid dispenser. I tried just
moving one clip point at a time, but couldn't get even half of the clip
points loose. I didn't want to break any of the clips points, so, asked
another trusted repair service, which has serviced our kitchen range in
the past, if the fellow would come out. When I mentioned a Sears
Kenmore dishwasher, he immediately declined, and recommended Sears.
With a bit of trepidation I arranged a service call from Sears. They
were super professional this time - didn't try to sell a home warranty
type service package, just told me the price of $59 plus parts and any
additional labor. They called 30 minutes before the expected window (8
a.m. to Noon), reminded me that the technician would call a few minutes
prior to showing up. The technician called about 10 a.m., arrived
promptly thereafter. Took him less than 30 minutes to take the
dispenser out, washed and rinsed he dispenser several times. During
this time he showed me what he was doing, so I would feel comfortable
doing the job myself if the same problem occurred in the future. The
labor amount was low enough that he didn't charge additional labor, just
the service call price.
I was thoroughly impressed with his ability and professionalism.
At this point I'll give Sears Appliance Service an *A+* and will
certainly recommend them to friends who ask.
I still give the fellow who answered my first call a *D-* because he
kept pushing the "appliance repair contract", wouldn't tell me anything
about what the costs might be in addition to the price of the service
call, etc. Not at all an encouraging word.
Net, one very satisfied customer, even after a rocky start with the
first telephone call.

is the soap door locked?, Maybe spray some vinigar in or around the soap door . Once you do a load the door will open and you can clean it.

It wasn't the soap door, it was Dawn dish washing liquid in the rinse
aid dispenser. The sears service fellow showed me how to remove the
dispenser and clean it out, as he was doing it for us. I hope neither
my wife, me, or anyone else does this again in our lives. :)
