The moderator of this group is well aware of my wanting to fix rather than toss. Sometimes the word is re-engineer..
The fix that I'm going to describe is for an old Amana refrigerator. This particular refrigerator has bars that fit in friction slots on each side of the shelf. You insert one end of the bar fully and it allows you to insert it to the other side, center it and HOPE that friction holds it in place.
30 years ago tape and hot glue (e.g. Bubble gum and paper clips) was the fix. That failed so it was time to engineer a real professional looking and functional fix.
The fix involved selecting and putting bumpers on an angle bracket (easier said than done). The bumper side is circular which is perfect. The other side of the angle bracket is tapped.
The fix is shown here https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/appliance-repair/photos/albums/1322596482 https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/appliance-repair/photos/albums/1322596482 in pictures.
Once the bumpers were installed, the process went something like this:
Push bar fully left. Mark edge. Push bar fully right. Mark edge.
Remove and check centering (marks equal on both sides) and correct if necessary,
Center based on your new marks
Use the bracket as a guide and the bumper close to the inner edge of the shelf, mark the position of the clearance hole from the ends.
Remove the bar.
Center the hole vertically and mark. Center-punch.
Drill and debur clearance holes.
Remove the markings of the "permanent" pen with methanol.
Install as before.
Insert the screws through the bar and install the Nylon retainers the screws.
They will prevent the screws from falling out.
Install and rotate the angle brackets so the bumpers rest on the sides of the shelf.
Your done!
The bar won't be able to slide from side to side.
Now some questions:
Is it marketable as a kit? e.g.ebay? Phillips screws could be used, but I like the look of
Torx. I would include a drill bit and Torx driver. 3 pair kit?
That still leaves the "marking method" and eraser. A fine Staedtler permanent marking pen and methanol as an eraser is my preferred method. Sometimes I use Post-it tape. You need a ruler. I used a 6" machinist'
automatic center punch and a variable speed drill.
It does require 4 vendors on my end.
Any comments appreciated.

Indelible marker will come off with rubbing alcohol. E6000 holds about anything (even broken synthetic gear in sewing machine), but may not be good to have around food until completley aired out.
